The USS Daedalus has been guided by the alien trader Proximal to the world of Talbian V. A water world with a few rocky atolls as its only landmasses, Talbian V is home to an order of monks called the Mendicants who aid travellers in the Reef Stars. From their floating refineries they process the waters of Talbian V into reaction mass for starships, and aid lost crews and stranded souls.

Could the USS Icarus be here? Could the search for their missing sister ship be so simply over?

The crew of the USS Daedulus find their training for the upcoming exploratory leap into the Game/Delta Quadrant cut short when Starfleet Command comes to them with a mystery from within the Reef Stars. A garbled communication with their sister ship the Icarus, and possibly the threat beyond the nightmares of all the devils in hell.

The USS Daedalus arrives at the Reef Stars, and almost instantly finds a mystery. A nearby star system matches the criteria for the Icarus to have gone to as their first port of call, but upon approaching the star not only do they pick up the Icarus's log beacon, but an odd spectral cloud passing over the star.

There is a gas giant, of middling size for its class, and it comes with the assortment of moons and captured asteroids that you'd expect. But its shieloette is defused, fuzzy, an intervening cloud blocking the sunlight from passing neatly through it. A web of material stretching across orbits, holding moons in check against the colossal gravity that would break them apart. A web spanning the miniature worlds of this jovian kingdom.

And in its heart, beating softly, the subspace log beacon...
