Personal History Jayla was born on Trill to two unjoined Trills. She and her younger sister grew up near the ocean in a temperate climate. Childhood was full of exploring the area around their home, Cliff diving, and, of course, school.

At the age of fifteen, a freak accident during a family camping trip in the wilds of Cambria (second planet of the Zeta system where no electronic technology is allowed) with some friends caused Jayla- the eldest unjoined Trill in their numbers genetically capable of being joined- to carry a symbiont for a short time until they could get to help. Unfortunately, they did not reach civilization until after the bond had formed to Jayla.

As a result, she struggled to come to grips with the joining. She went through a time of depression which culminated in a suicide attempt. Her parents sent her to live with their friend Saraja Jelic, a joined Trill, who helped Jayla to work through the memories and emotions that had overwhelmed her. While there, she met and was annoyed by Alex Rylan. Though she never would have admitted it at the time, his unconditional friendship- no matter how horribly she treated him- helped her through the difficult time. Eventually, she returned to her cheerful self.

Upon completion of secondary school, Jayla decided to enter Starfleet. Jelic advised medical school, and since Jayla idolized her mentor by this time, she applied to Starfleet Medical and was accepted.

She excelled in her studies, taking to medicine quickly, and graduated near the top of her class with a focus on pediatric surgery. To her delight, she was assigned to an Internship under Doctor Jelic on the USS Impala, where she also completed her residency and fellowship.

She was assigned to the USS Frost as the chief of Pediatrics due to her ease in dealing with children. The Frost had a substantial child population, leaving Jayla with her hands full. After two years, she was promoted to Assistant Cheif Medical Officer. Following nearly a full year there, she was promoted to CMO of the USS Black Hawk.

While on the Black Hawk, right in the middle of a crisis, she got the idea that one of Kij's past hosts may be taking over when she became stressed. Also at this time, she felt as if she had no friends and nobody in whom to confide. Then, during a battle with the consortium, she watched an old friend die. Everything added up to cause significant mental distress and the two months' leave granted to the whole crew was used visiting her family and attending regular counseling sessions at the Symbiosis Commission.

Her fears of Kij's past hosts taking over turned out to be unfounded. The truth was that her mind would not accept some of the things she did under stress and so separated her from it. It is not dangerous, and so she has opted to just let it be for the time being.

Upon returning to the Black Hawk-A, she still felt alienated from her friends. She could not explain it or understand it, but she didn't feel comfortable with people. She struggled with it for some time before the ship entered the Finnean Convergence Zone and the crew’s memories were wiped.

Without her memory, Jayla was returned to her usual cheerful self. Since their memories returned earliest first continuing through to the most recent, she was reminded how her life had been full of mostly good and that cheered her up tremendously. Even when the memories of her recent troubles returned, she was able to maintain her cheerful disposition.

Shortly thereafter, the death of another friend convinced her that she needed a change, so she cashed in on six months’ worth of leave time, during which she worked at the symbiosis commission hospital and befriended a Horned Fox which she eventually adopted and named Long John Silver- Silver for short. Upon returning to active duty, she was assigned to the Daedalus as the CMO.
