Personal History He was born to a good family.

Everything between that and Starfleet is almost painfully cookie cutter. So we'll skip to the relevant parts of the histrionics when we need to. William Maddox was an average student at Starfleet, his focus more on the engineering track than any other. Unfortunately, his training at the Academy was condensed dramatically when Starfleet found its peaceful mission of exploration interrupted by a declaration of war from the Dominion.

And then the Borg happened. His first ship assignment aboard the USS Budapest nearly became his last, as the Norway class light cruiser was part of the first wave of ships to attempt to intercept the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001.

Bows and arrows against the lightning, to quote an artilleryman from another time.

Of the 300 assigned crew, Maddox and sixteen others were the only survivors. Cited in reports, and after recovering, he was promoted to the JayGee Mafia on board the USS Nightingale where the next decade of his career would take place. There he learned the tenants of being a command-level officer, and it was those lessons that saw him put into the executive officer neat aboard the Parliament class starship Ottowa.

And it was on the Ottowa he learned the lessons needed to become a first-rate captain of the United Federation of Planets Starfleet. His work onboard the Ottowa leant more towards the engineering support roles the Parliament class had been designed for, and in doing so he brushed shoulders with the Office of Special Investigation on more than one instance. To this end he garnered the attention of OSI higher-ups, and when his name came up for promotion to captain of his own ship they made him an offer.

His Captaincy of the USS That Shouldn't Go There is a redacted nightmare of half-truths and blank spaces. But unlike a Starfleet Intelligence profile, his absences and lacks of information do not coincide with the toppling of criminal empires or despotic nation states. In truth, his tenure as master and commander of that ship could be called the groundwork for a great endeavour.

That endeavour led to the creation of the Proteus Drive Core, and the creation of the Icarus Project. He's spent a lot of time and energy building the ships and crews needed to go on the greatest adventure of this new century.
